Unless you have been sleeping under a rock, most of you will have heard someone talk about “a gig” or “gig work,” a method people have been using to make some extra or quick cash. But what are these so-called “gigs”? The answer may differ quite a bit depending on whom you ask, but this week at Shade Academia, we are going to do our best to define this topic and explain the what, the how, and the why of gigs and how they came to be so prevalent in 2024.

The gig economy has seen explosive growth in recent years, fundamentally changing how people work and businesses operate. Fueled by digital platforms, this new labor market offers unparalleled flexibility, allowing workers to set their own schedules and choose their assignments. This flexibility is especially appealing to those juggling multiple responsibilities, such as students, parents, and those seeking supplementary income. However, this shift also brings about significant challenges, including income instability and lack of benefits for gig workers.
