A Word from Our Community: Smart Ways to Spend Your Winter Break
For many college students, winter break offers 4–5 weeks off between the fall and spring semesters. While it’s tempting to completely unplug from academics, this time can be a golden opportunity to prepare for the upcoming term, explore future opportunities, and recharge your mind. Here are some tips to make the most of your break:
1. Prepare for Internships and Career Opportunities
Winter break is a perfect time to take the next step toward your career goals.
- Update Your Materials: Work on your resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile. Add recent accomplishments, experiences, or projects from the fall semester.
- Research Internships: Start identifying organizations or companies offering internships in your field. Applications can be time-consuming, so getting a head start allows you to submit polished and thoughtful applications.
- Apply Early: Many internship programs are competitive. Submitting early increases your chances of getting noticed.
- Job Shadowing: If you’re unsure about your career path, shadow professionals to see if a role aligns with your expectations. Is this the degree or job for you? Use this time to explore.
2. Plan for Your Spring Semester
A little preparation now can make a huge difference in how smoothly the next term begins.
- Review Your Course Schedule: Is your program still in line with your career goals? If not, research alternatives and reach out to advisors to adjust your schedule or discuss changing your major.
- Apply for Scholarships: Many institutions open scholarship applications to currently enrolled students. Submitting applications early makes your submission stand out to review committees.
- Check Financial Aid and Bills: Make sure your tuition is covered and that any financial aid or grants are ready for the upcoming semester. Plan a weekly budget for essentials like groceries and rent.
- Order Course Materials: Start looking for textbooks and supplies early. Shopping now gives you time to hunt for deals and avoid the last-minute rush.
3. Balance Productivity with Rest
Winter break isn’t all about academics—this is also time to take care of you.
- Reconnect: Spend quality time with friends and family you may not have seen during the busy semester.
- Explore Hobbies: Whether it’s painting, playing an instrument, or catching up on your favorite books, use this time to revisit activities that make you happy.
- Maintain a Routine: While it’s tempting to sleep until noon, keeping a healthy schedule is key. Get your 8 hours of sleep, exercise regularly, and set aside time for chores or part-time work to earn extra money.
- Catch Up on Reading: Whether it’s fiction for fun or non-fiction to broaden your knowledge, diving into a book can keep your mind sharp and give you a break from screens.
4. Reflect and Reset
Winter break is the perfect chance to hit pause and reflect:
- What went well last semester?
- What habits or study strategies can you improve?
- Are you moving toward the career and life you envision?
Take these weeks to prepare, relax, and reset. By balancing self-care with productivity, you’ll return to campus in the spring feeling recharged and ready to succeed.
Wishing all of our student readers a restful, productive winter break!
